thanks
okay so there we go..
its been two weeks after a really wonderful show
I won the external examiners prize for outstanding achievement.. yipee..
and got a first class degree.. though funnily enough neuromirror wasnt what got me the grade..seriously.. it was my two dissertations and research leading up to the final piece..
very grateful for everyone who helped me this year and provided guidance. esp. jen; stuart, steve and derek..many thanks.. and goes without saying, if it wasnt for rob, anneke, spencer and nice people like tom at the media centre and joan the cleaning lady.. it probably wouldnt have been as nice trying to get to the finish line.. so thanks to all Im really eternally grateful to you all.
friends you know who you are..thanks

The works
neuromirror.info is officially up and running.
Im in the final stages of testing and developing the mirrors logic, this weekend is a mad one.
last week I spent most of my time printing, and testing cameras, the big tv, getting technicians to authorise and install drivers. thanks rob, the technician.
okay so heres the setup. brainwave device hooks into ZOOM guitar synth (cheers andy). Guitar synth connects to a JVC amp. JVC amp connects to Speakers and the headphone goes to the computer. the computer (flash player 7) extracts the amplitudes and groups them in realtime in sets of three. like:
15
22
13
15,22,13
14
11
23
14,11,23
if you compare the first set to the second set you will realise that in the first set its second value (22) is greater than that of the two on the side (15,13). this denotes a surge in alpha brainwaves. I use the frequency of this pattern to activate glitch effects on the camera stream.

Dear Tony
from email to tony:
"Ive had a wacky Sunday. heres the summary.. Despite having tried really hard.. Getting values into flash from the log files Spectralab creates is never going to be in realtime..its almost futile trying. So Ive now opted for an (external) effects console that distorts the EEG device's audio feed before giving it to flash."
thanks to Andy my next door neighbour who has lent me his guitar effects patch and more than that his time.

Neuromirror Shocking update
'Neuromirror' name has been chosen for my project. Thanks to all the guys on newstoday for helping out in that respect.
Went to see solarshade in Huddersfield today bought 2m of their reflective film.
Came back to uni to borrow the EEG device and was notified and duly mortified that someone else had taken it out. you could have pointed a gun at my head at that stage and I wouldnt have cared.. anyhow.. after much sweating and rushing about and making phoen calls.... all is well I managed to get a hold of the person who had borrowed the device. Russel Palin,(doing a masters) he was awaiting a component to make his project, but his project doesnt have to be in for another six weeks which leaves plenty of time for EEG usage on both projects without any conflicts. Subsequently we spoke for about 2 hours and found ways of doing things together.
Im now helping claire out with her php stuff.

The brainwave analyser outputs audio and
Spectralab the audio analysis program, can log data..
it basically writes data into a text files with (avg peak frequencies / Signal to noise ratio's.. etc) based on audio input.
issue is, it keeps "appending" to a file as soon as you start logging. it doesnt write one value it will rite many if you choose a high frequency.
This causes issues when the file gets too big.. the delay in reading and parsing will be noticeable.. and an inefficient way of providing input control.
I was just discussing various ways of getting this data to control Flash with nic and after I mentioned chopping the last appended line with php he mentioned that you can load values from php into flash.

right good studio day today, new computers are here in the studio.. and having said that we've all got our laptops in with us.
I took the challenge of coding a simple grapher element, for sam's asp based emotivity diary.. it was really simple to do and is similar to what I'm doing, reading the brainwave analysers values that are extracted with spectra-lab.

while going through my past experiments I just reminded myself of how erratic and unpredictable Flash 6's camera support is. forget using masks.. I think the auto snapshot setup I have is definately the way to go. and Tincam seems to support multiple cameras just fine. bit of news
I keep dipping in and out of different programming environments as experiments necessitate their use.
on the physical making things side, my EEG experiments have yielded good results.
recorded my own and other people's brainwaves and analysed them in spectralab.
there is a possibility to collaborate with any other students who might want to use the same feed.
with regards to the mirrors, the lovely people at Solarshade are supplying me with samples. somehow I may be able to coat my own mirror with their sticky plastic.
I've also looked into sun-pipes, that have super reflective qualities they are used to divert sunlight into buildings, as they are thin pipes, I was thinking of dismantling and using them in relation to the physcial/mechanical manipulation of the mirror idea.
I've also been in touch with a firm that deals with specialist mirrors and they came back with prices for observation mirrors. my chat with stuart has made me think 45 degree mirrors are the way to go.

I never sleep - glitch progress.
One of my dying ambitions for the past two years, (ever since I saw VINYLVIDEO by sengmüller) has been to create a streaming glitch protocol. a live glitch maker of networked images and video, influenced by external input and as transparent as a layer of communication. forget the video part for a second.. up to now I've inched closer and closer to my aim. and Im at a point that I can say 'give me development time.' seriously tests are coming along nicely with my photogenic celebrities, in that I'm using base_64 to glitch images directly on a live server..a process much like the hex editors. One character out of place and internet explorer doesnt know what to do with itself.
I even shared the good news with Dimitre and sent him a sample. more glitchiness to come. -Im basically even seeing this as part of the input that I discussed with Steve Symons, my technical studies tutor.

Mad as a Hatter
its funny how one thing leads to another, and then links back to your original ideas and experiments, one being my alice typgraphy experiments. Alice in Wonderland in particular and the mad hatter that features in that story.
Apparently exposure to mercury leads to tremmors,
ticks, loss of muscle control, weakness, headaches, insanity, skin
discoloration.. etc. if you ever wondered where the term the mad hatter comes from? well apparently it was used to treat or cut felt, Im not too sure of its innate hat making usage, but according to this by York Press ISBN: 0912752017
hat makers would go mad after a while due to inhaling the mercury vapor in their workshops.
Gardner (Dodgson 1960) states the term mad as a hatter"...more likely owes its origin to the fact that until recently hatters actually did go mad..."

Mercury Hg
okay, right onto this physical installation. which has led me to investigate making my own mirror with mercury, pressed between plates of glass.
I remember when I was 3-4.. one of my uncles gave my mum a little sealed bottle of Mercury from god knows where he used to work! AS a kid, I mean that was absolutely amazing to look at and play with!!
Trouble is, it was contained in one of those brown medicine bottles.
so my mum put it in large clear glass container, some sort of narrow necked vase with large base. I probably had a grand total of a few hours to look at it and tip the glass container.
... and actually touch the merury, I remember specifically looking at it on my fingers, as it broke up into a million pieces and slipped onto the carpet, were talking about tiny drops here but nonetheless!
Its been twenty years, but I sure as hell hope I never inhaled any of it. same goes to my mum, I hope she didnt either
I think she ended up throwing it away, when it had lots of orange (oxidisation)? and fluff on it.
I always knew it was dangerous, and I'm sure my mum didnt let me drink the stuff :-p scared now. though my fillings and the regular fish intake probably give me my steady mercury dose.
Apparently its vapor is quite dangerous, according to this email post and countless other sites I found >mercury risk
some even offer details of a mercury exchange program

Erlang is a programming language which has many features more commonly associated with an operating system than with a programming language: concurrent processes, scheduling, memory management, distribution, networking, etc. probably sounds boring to most people.. but Im actually rolling on the floor and clapping my hands in delight.. this means that I can possibly develop my 'glitch protocol'.. a streaming protocol that glitches images in realtime.

Dan Hays makes images that present the natural world as tightly controlled, heavily mediated, and yet strangely seductive. Showcased in views of animal cages painted in punchy, heightened colors or pixilated paintings of woodland that feature psychedelic effects, his techniques invest the domestic and everyday with surprising new meanings. Hays has exhibited his work globally and has won various awards, including the UK's prestigious John Moores prize for painting in 1997.

Because of incompatibility of software, the opened text appeared to be practically unreadable ascii abracadabra. The only fragment of it that made any sense looked something like: [...] J8~g#|\;Net. Angela Lorenz - Eye Magazine
Pier aka BlueJam on newstoday, let me know of an article in eye magazine Article about Angela Lorenz,
"...Her design – at its best, a stripped-down digital minimalism ... Her design looks as if the human eye or hand has played no great part in its creation..."
"...Her best work has a purity that suggests the emergence of a second generation of digital aesthetics to rival the ‘layered look’ of the past two decades. Whether you call it laptop graphics or lowercase graphics, it represents a genuinely fresh voice in contemporary design. As Lorenz notes: ‘I’m really rather uninterested in “classical” images. When I was working at the pre-press house I always found the repro part extremely boring – making skies bluer and teeth whiter and everything as “realistic” as possible – all this fetishism with the newest state-of-the-art fm screening on glossy paper to make it look “perfect” and like the “real” thing. I mean, in the end the “real” thing is little dots of ink on paper. That’s what I find much more interesting.’..."

Film Grain
I'd previously only alluded to the aesthetic qualities film grain after reading an article about the photochemical development process of negatives.
While I was looking into interfaces in my crypt blog, I came across this very apt quote from spielberg, which has now found a place in my dissertation. I thought maybe I should pick up on it -heres the quote
Spielberg says: "Now the thing I'm most saddened by is the constant talk about the photochemical process becoming a thing of Thomas Edison's past. Theres a magic about chemistry and film, Sure a digital shot is steady. I doesnt have to ride through the gate of a projector. And, sure, it's as clean as the OR in a major hospital. That's exactly whats wrong with it. Film has a molecular structure called grain; evena still of just a flower in a vase has life because of the grain. because of the molecules in the film, especially if you sit in the first five rows of any movie theatre, you know what Im talking about. The screen is alive, teh screen is always alive with chaos and excitement, and that will certainly be gone when we convert to a digital camera.

Mid term review introspective
I started off this year mentioning I'd like to do a number of projects around the theme of glitches, cryptology and alternative input devices...
when I first spoke to Jen my tutor, she mentioned that my ideas relate to each other and I dispelled most of my fears about presenting them as the package that is my final year project.
Anyhow getting back to the review. I really burnt my energy on preparing and making my ideas presentable the night before -so much so that at the review I was physically quite tired, "note to self not to stay up ridiculously late again!" -ilness last week didnt help either. :p
my time slot was also misplaced by two other students who had much lengthier reviews describing their work. I didnt want mine to extend into other peoples time so I didnt quite know how to deal with the time shortage to begin with!
not that I feel any resentment towards either of them
I started off by saying some of my most memorable projects came about as a result of intense work on other projects, and I still stand by that claim
Though it seems from the comments I received that people might think I might be spreading them a bit thinly if I were to do them all in the course of one year.
youve got to remember that I'm used to working overtime and essentially the major works that I did in year two and wrote close to 16'000 words for, happened at the same time as I was chairing the enterprise group, and initiating a few collaborative projects with friends.
Unfortunately as a result of my multi project approach, I couldnt receive much feedback..Towards the end, when asked to show the main focus and sum up my general area of work this year, I said my work is mainly concerned with glitches and cryptology.
hopefully I'll be posting some of my very focused ideas here. some of which come straight from the documentation I presented before, but am repackaging them for this blog.
