terminal
based on a phone call and email exchange with Tony notable glitch artist friend and my colaboration partner on The Glitch DVD Im begining to warm to the idea of having a terminal there to let the viewers of the mirror glitch installation interact with the code. this means a lot in terms of the representation of concept.
it allows it to be reinterpreted.
also the degree of control or false sense of control may affect their view of how I view them.
it also allows me to think about my keyboards and possible ways of utilising self made keyboard modifications.

KMC keyboard mouse control and screens
okay new tools I cant do without. I use my laptop and desktop simultaneously as I currently cant afford a second graphics card and monitor for my pc.
I tried Maxivista which is a virtual monitor driver that allows any pc to function as a second screen, so my laptop displays an extended pc monitor whenever I need. its not all rosy.. as this took 10 support posts and many hours to get working. When it did work it was a bit buggy..
on another functional level.
ShareKMC lets you share keyboard-clipboard and mouse, even clipboard bitmaps article link
download page it works between two computers on a LAN, obviously in close proximity.
In terms of rock solid performance though, the daddy of them all is the open source Synergy available from its sourceforge project page Its unique in that it allows the much wanted feature of rolling off the screen and its much faster than ShareKMC, only drawback is that it currently only supports text between clipboards.. they have KVM (like maxivista) and bitmap clipboard functionality planned.

NASA hears words not yet spoken
"Jorgensen's team found that sensors under the chin and one each side of the Adam's apple pick up the brain's commands to the speech organs, allowing the subauditory, or "silent speech" to be captured."
"Biological signals arise when reading or speaking to oneself with or without actual lip or facial movement."

Why alt. input?
Ive been asked a couple of times about why I want to use alternative input devices, well its not just for the sake of using them. If the use, relates or enhances the original concept in some way, or if it develops my understanding of the device considerably then I use it. like the IBVA system, which is about providing an intimate relationship between the user and mirror in my Glitch Mirror Project.

meeting with Jen
had a great meeting with Jen yesterday, discussed what Im doing with the keyboards and it seems like Ive found some kind of a focus with the mirror/personal glitch idea.
so dead ahead.. more stuff out of wood and windows programming.

making stuff
right making keyboards out of wood.. not whittling them or anything, just sawing and sanding.
I reckon the level of interaction with input device, and its appeal is in great part due to its physical or tactile nature..
wood feels nice to the touch and it encourages interaction in my opinion
well I guess we'll have to wait and see.
on a different level I'm also interested in making the user work and expend some muscle energy in order to get something to work on the screen
it kinda ties in with the theme of appreciating all the computerisation we take for granted.

Your keyboard or mouse

FrogPad Alternative Keyboard
New alternative 20 key one handed keyboard on the market which I actually see myself using, if money was no object today. It seems to be designed with the strengths and weaknesses of each finger in mind *good news RSI sufferers* and with respect to most commonly typed words in the English language.
It was only just launched at this years comdex.

Keyboards
whatever work I'll be doing for this year, it will probably involve modifying the most basic input component of all. the keyboard.
I have a thing about keyboards. Ive been collecting them for a while.
For about a year now though Ive been collecting keyboards for the purpose of modifiying them into alternative input devices. Theres even an RSI sufferers keyboard in there.
It was donated by Sam and Oscar over summer from their company's bin. The manager of the company they were working for, brought his dog(s) into the office one day and they chewed the keyboard cord. Thus rendering it useless. So Its now in my keyboard stockpile.
if you have any keyboards to donate, please drop me an email.
